Article From About.com, "Creating a Graphic Design PDF Portfolio"

—What resources or forms do design firms want to be contacted with first?
E-mail is better because it’s much easier to forward along to multiple people. PDF is nice because it’s usually quicker to flip through the work than most websites. Also you don’t have to worry about a connection problem rendering the work impossible to view. That said, at our firm we now expect people to be able to design for both print and web mediums so it’s good to have a site in addition to a PDF and physical book. Also you can show more work on a site than you can in a PDF which can be limited by network file size issues. —Chris Lowe, Freelance Recruiter at Tether

NOTE: Create your pdf in a multi-page document such as InDesign, this will enable the viewer to flip through the pdf just like they would a book. All images can be imported simply as jpgs, remember to title and describe each piece. Your pdf must carry out your brand that you have developed in your resumé and business card.

When saving your file into a pdf document save as the smallest file possible. Most firms will be previewing your work online which is only 72dpi-RGB model. Your pdf portfolio should be no more than 7-8 megs.
