MAT 1235 Calculus II, Winter 2021

Objective:This second course in calculus emphasizes integral calculus of functions of one variable.  The primary aims of the course are to help students develop new problem solving and critical reasoning skills and to prepare them for further study in mathematics, the physical sciences, or engineering.  By the end of the course, students should be able to:

Computer Software:  The calculus classes will meet in computer classrooms equipped with one PC for every two students.  A variety of mathematical and statistical software is available on these computers, including the computer algebraic system Maple.  Substantial use of Maple will be made in this class and in many subsequent math courses.  Maple will be available for use on computers in labs throughout the campus.  Copies of the software for use on your own computer will also be available for purchase at a substantial discount for students (You need to get a discount code from your instructor).

Calculator:   Scientific/graphic calculators  may be allowed in exams/quizzes.  However, calculators with more than184 K combined memory (RAM/Flash ROM) or symbolic computation ability are NOT allowed (e.g.TI-83 Plus Silver Ed., TI-89, TI-92 Casio FX-2.0 HP 38g, 39g, 40g, 48g/48g+/48gx, 49g).  You are expected to learn to use your calculator on your own.

Exams and Quizzes:  There will be 15-18 quizzes, 3 in-class exams and a final.

Homework: Homework problems will be assigned daily by using the online homework system WebAssign.  Quizzes problems will be based on homework problems.

Make-Up Policies for Exams and Quizzes: If a student has a  documented conflict that will prevent him or her from taking an exam at the scheduled time, he/she must arrange IN ADVANCE with the instructor to take the exam early.  There are no makeups for quizzes, instead the lowest two quiz grades will be dropped

Makeups on exams ARE NOT AUTOMATIC.  Do NOT assume that because you miss an exam that you will get to make it up. A makeup exam must be APPROVED by me. Lying to avoid taking an exam is considered as an act of academic dishonesty.

A grade of "Incomplete" will not be given if the student does not have a passing grade (70%) at the time of the request.

Attendance: Beginning with the first week of the quarter, attendance will either be taken by the instructor, or based on participation from weekly small graded learning/assessment opportunities.

Class Participation:
1. You can get class participation points by answering questions in class.
2. There are group classwork everyday.
At the end of the quarter, your grades on class participation will be determined by the above activities and other observations by the instructor. You Class Participation grade will be calculated based on a 15-point scale.

Penalties for breaches of academic integrity includes no credits for the work in question or no credits for the course.
