Interactivity and Meaning

Meaning is a community of understanding. The transfer of meaning is the basic purpos of language, and the association between language and meaning is indissoluable.–Mario Pei

Why is the communication of meaning so difficult?

>Concepts are not self-contained but are integrated into much larger contexts.

Author made the statemet-We can define human language as a set of agreed-upon conventions that make such rapid exchanges of information possbile in spite of differences.

–How do you see that point in context of online communication, text to text not face to face?

How can we translate the concept "Speaker's situation > Speech > Hearer's response" in relation to interactive environment?

Respond to his comment that a linear interactive presentation is LESS interactive than a printed book. Do you agree?

Heightened freedom may mean loss of author control, how do you feel about that as a designer?

Structural Ambiguity: An Emergin Interactive Aesthetic

Altering narrative> what are limitations in theater and the book?

Computer technology allows us to create elaborate simulated worlds within which players have considerable freedom of action. Where have you seen the same thing demonstrated in the interactive world? Or where would you like to?

Narrative ambiguity= structural ambiguity, closed-ended structural ambiguity, open-ended structural ambiguity

Authored Interactivity or Game? Ambiguous elements must have at least surface coherence and be informed by some encompassing vision.

Interpretive ambiguity is a natural consequence of collaboration between auther and player.
