ASSIGNMENT: Due 10/4 | Visual Audit

Due: Monday, October 4th
Create a 11 x17 (landscape) print out of your process of visual discovery.

The visual audit is way to engage the client in a visual discussion without feeling committed to the end results. Often a client will verbalize what they are thinking when in fact what they are visualizing is quite different. This allows the designer to review the brief and assign meaning and image relationships to the design campaign. In Saussure's theories of semiotics he states there are three main areas which form what we understand as semiotics; the signs themselves; the way they are organized into systems and the context in which they appear. According to Saussure the two fundamental elements that make up a sign are the Signifier and the Signified. A sign is produced when these two elements are brought together.

Often in a visual audit the designer will include reference to competitors, or organizations with similar goals. They will look at images, metaphors and or shapes that elude or emphasize meaning. They will discuss use of illustration vs. photography, abstraction vs. realism. This may be a time to address color palette and typography.

The goal of the visual audit is to engage your client into a verbal discussion. To help aid in the design discernment process.
