Grading

Each student's grade has two portions - individual and team. Individual grades are assigned to each student independently. Team grades are assigned to a team as a whole. Final team grades will be adjusted by the instructor to reflect each student's individual contribution to the team's success.

Individual Contributions to Team Success

Each individual is expected to contribute significantly to the team's success. Also, each individual is expected to work in a variety of areas, including digital, analog, software, and documentation. Individual contributions will be tracked by a variety of methods including self-reports and interviews. The final team grade will be adjusted for each individual according to their overall contribution to their team and the variety of types of work accomplished.

Late or Incomplete Work

Each assignment will be evaluated at the time it is due.  If work is incomplete, it will be given partial credit based on how much is complete at the due date. Any incomplete work must be complete by the time of the next design review.

In the event of illness or other uncontrollable circumstances, individual deadlines may be rescheduled by the instructor.

Illness

In order to minimize the impact of the current H1N1 influenza pandemic at SPU we ask that students who are experiencing the following symptoms DO NOT attend class or lab sessions: Sudden fever accompanied by any of the following: chills, headache, sore throat, muscle aches, cough, vomiting or diarrhea. You may return to class once your fever is gone for 24 hours without the use of medication. Please notify the instructor via email if you are missing class due to illness. Thank you for your help protecting our community.

Academic Integrity

The current edition of the SPU Undergraduate Catalog describes the University’s commitment to academic integrity, which is breached by academic dishonesty of various kinds. Among these is turning in another’s work as your own, committing plagiarism, which is the copying of portions of another’s words from a published or electronic source without acknowledgement of that source and consulting solution keys not authorized by the instructor. The penalty for a breach of academic integrity is a double-zero (-100%) for the work in question on the first offense and a failing grade for the course as a whole with repeated offenses.

Laboratory Use

Students enrolled in EE/CPE 4211/4212/4899 must agree to obey the Engineering Laboratory Rules when using the engineering laboratories. Students who violate the safety rules will have their quarter grade for Programming and Homework Assignments reduced by ten percent for each occurrence after an initial warning.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

In accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, students with specific disabilities that qualifies for academic accommodations should contact Disabled Student Services (DSS) in the Center for Learning. DSS in turn will send a Disability Verification Letter to the course instructor indicating what accommodations have been approved.

Emergency procedure

Please note the emergency procedures posted in the classroom or laboratory, and note the emergency exits. In case of an emergency (fire, earthquake, hazardous material spillage, bomb threat, etc.), the class will evacuate the building and gather in the parking lot near the alumni center. Please try to stay together so that we can check that everyone has made it safely out of the building.

Course Evaluation

I hope that you will participate in an online evaluation of this course and its instructor in a thoughtful and constructive manner. The evaluation data is used to make improvements in the course, and your feedback is considered when selecting textbooks, designing teaching methods and preparing assignments. Courses are evaluated using the Banner Course Evaluation System. All answers are completely confidential - your name is not stored with your answers in any way. In addition, I will not see any results of the evaluation until after final grades are submitted to the University.

Inclement Weather

The University maintains an Emergency Closure Hotline (206-281-2800). In the event of inclement weather or an emergency that might close the university, please call the Hotline for the most up-to-date closure information or check the SPU website. Both will be updated before 6:00 a.m. Information on evening classes, events, and athletic games will also be updated.

Project Funding

Save all your receipts! Make sure to identify the student who paid the bill on each receipt.

Student teams may be eligible for reimbursement of some of their project costs. The guidelines are:

  1. Company sponsored projects should be funded by the sponsor. SPU engineering will not provide funds for company sponsored projects.
  2. To be eligible for reimbursement, each student team must submit a budget to be approved by the instructor in autumn quarter. Modifications to the budget may be made only with the approval of the instructor. Expenses beyond the approved budget will not be reimbursed.
  3. Projects funded by SPU engineering become the property of SPU engineering at the conclusion of EE/CPE 4899.
  4. Projects must be complete and in good working condition in order for student teams to receive reimbursement.
  5. Reimbursement for eligible projects is provided as follows:
bulletStudent teams are responsible for the first $400 in project costs. Students must submit appropriate receipts for these expenses.
bulletAt the conclusion of EE/CPE 4899, SPU engineering will reimburse a maximum of $1000 per team in project costs above $400. Students must submit appropriate receipts for these expenses. Per SPU policy, reimbursements go directly to the person who paid the bill. Once reimbursements have been made directly to the payers, students are free to shuffle funds around the team at will.
