Grading

Design Projects Four projects that will require you to design and/or analyze a communications system. These projects will be done in small groups, and the group will receive one grade. 30%
Laboratory Exercises Students will perform hands-on experiments exploring communications media, analog and digital transmission of data. These experiments will be done in small groups, and the group will receive one grade. 25%
Individual Preparedness Students will be asked questions about the currently-assigned material during class.
Grades will be based on the quality and correctness of each response.
The student's lowest nonzero score will be dropped. There will be no make-ups for missed classes except in extreme cases.

Final Exam Final exam will be comprehensive. 20%

 

93: A, 90: A-, 87: B+, 83: B, 80: B-, 77: C+, 73: C, 70: C-, 67: D+, 60: D, Below 60: E.
Grades may be adjusted if necessary.

Late policy

Whenever work is turned in at any time or place other than in class, on the due date, it must include a Homework Cover Sheet.

Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date they are due. Late work is penalized based on calendar days (including weekends and holidays). For example, if an assignment is due on Friday, it will be penalized 20% if it is turned in on Saturday, 40% on Sunday, and no credit for Monday or later.  Work turned in late will be penalized as follows:

Late on day due 10% penalty
One calendar day late  (by OMH closing) 20% penalty
Two calendar days late (by OMH closing) 40% penalty
Three or more calendar days late  No credit

Exceptions may be granted in special circumstances (such as illness) at the discretion of the instructor. To request an exception, explain on the Homework Cover Sheet.

Illness

If you are ill, especially with a fever, please stay home and rest. You may return to class once your fever is gone for 24 hours without the use of medication. Please  notify the instructor via email if you are missing class due to illness. Students who miss class may participate in the online class session or view recordings of lectures.

Academic Integrity

The current edition of the SPU Undergraduate Catalog describes the University’s commitment to academic integrity, which is breached by academic dishonesty of various kinds. Among these is turning in another’s work as your own, committing plagiarism, which is the copying of portions of another’s words from a published or electronic source without acknowledgement of that source and consulting solution keys not authorized by the instructor. The penalty for a breach of academic integrity is a double-zero (-100%) for the work in question on the first offense and a failing grade for the course as a whole with repeated offenses.

Laboratory Use

Students enrolled in EE/CPE 3550 must agree to obey the Engineering Laboratory Rules when using the engineering laboratories. Students who violate the safety rules will have their quarter grade for Programming and Homework Assignments reduced by ten percent for each occurrence after an initial warning.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

In accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, students with specific disabilities that qualifies for academic accommodations should contact Disabled Student Services (DSS) in the Center for Learning. DSS in turn will send a Disability Verification Letter to the course instructor indicating what accommodations have been approved.

Exam policy

Please note when the final exam is scheduled and avoid making conflicting travel plans. Final exams will be re-scheduled only for students who have three or more exams on the same day.

Emergency procedure

Please note the emergency procedures posted in the classroom or laboratory, and note the emergency exits. In case of an emergency (fire, earthquake, hazardous material spillage, bomb threat, etc.), the class will evacuate the building and gather in the parking lot near the alumni center. Please try to stay together so that we can check that everyone has made it safely out of the building.

Course Evaluation

I hope that you will participate in an online evaluation of this course and its instructor in a thoughtful and constructive manner. The evaluation data is used to make improvements in the course, and your feedback is considered when selecting textbooks, designing teaching methods and preparing assignments. Courses are evaluated using the Banner Course Evaluation System. All answers are completely confidential - your name is not stored with your answers in any way. In addition, I will not see any results of the evaluation until after final grades are submitted to the University.

Inclement Weather

The University maintains an Emergency Closure Hotline (206-281-2800). In the event of inclement weather or an emergency that might close the university, please call the Hotline for the most up-to-date closure information or check the SPU website. Both will be updated before 6:00 a.m. Information on evening classes, events, and athletic games will also be updated.
