Who Am I?

Professionally, I am a mathematician, statistician, and college professor, but I'm not going to tell you much about that here.  The point of this page is to tell you a bit about who I am and what I do when I'm not teaching or doing mathematics.

First and foremost, I am a husband and a father.  Most of my free time is spent with my wife Beth and my kids Rebecca, Mariah, Julia, Suzanna, and Thomas.  Beth and I met while we were undergraduates at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, where we were both members of the Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity.  Beth is a registered nurse who now teaches part time in the nursing program at Olympic College in Bremerton.  She is also a CPR and first aid instructor (see kitsapcpr.com).

We live just outside of Bremerton, Washington, which is on the opposite side of Puget Sound from Seattle.  Since I work in Seattle, I commute daily by ferry across the sound.

My favorite pastimes include backpacking, hiking, canoeing, and camping.  Perhaps my favorite activity of all is backpacking.  By the time I graduated from college, I had already done more than 3,000 miles of backpacking, and I had spent four summers living out of a tent.  Beth and I got engaged on the trail at Zion National Park in Utah (see photo at left).  Since we began having children, I have not been able go backpacking nearly as often, but I still camp and day hike as often as possible.

Our family trips have ranged from numerous short weekend outings to a three week trip from New York to Montana and Wyoming and back.  For some additional pictures from one of my trips, look here.  The kids really enjoy and look forward to these trips (especially Rebecca).

Over the past several years, I have started to introduce my three oldest daughters to backpacking.  Our trips have included Glacier Basin and Spray Park in Mount Rainier National Park as well as Deer Lake, Mink Lake, the Grand Valley, and Cape Alava at Olympic National Park.

I am also Roman Catholic.  We are members of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, a wonderful parish in Bremerton, Washington.  I am very involved with adult education programs at my parish, including serving as the leader of a weekly Bible study program.  At Sunday masses, I serve regularly as a lector.

Some of my other interests include woodworking, gardening, and reading, but I don't get nearly as much time to do these things as I would like.
