Current Homework Assignments:

Tentative last assignment, due Monday, March 10:

Past Homework Assignments:

Assignment for Friday, January 11:

  • Turn in your solutions for the rest of the Gamma Function Worksheet (whatever you did not turn in at the end of class on Monday).  You are strongly encouraged to work with your group from class on the entire worksheet.  If you do, please just turn in ONE copy with all of your names on it.  Solutions

Assignment for Wednesday, January 16:

  • Turn in exercises 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 from the end of the Continuous Distributions handout (p. Cont-10).    Solutions

Nothing will be collected on Friday, Jan. 18, and there is no class on Monday, Jan. 21.

Assignment for Wednesday, January 23:

Assignment for Monday, January 28:

Assignment for Wednesday, January 30:

Assignment for Wednesday, Feb. 6:

Assignment for Friday, Feb. 8:

  • Complete and turn in the baseball salary portion of the Sampling Distribution handout.  In your discussion at the end, please also include reference to the previous examples from the first six pages of the handout.  You will need the following files:
    • Minitab worksheet with the salaries (to download, right click on the link and select "Save Target as...".  When saving the file, change the name from MLBsalaries2004.txt to MLBsalaries2004.mtw.  If you do not change the name, it will not open properly in Minitab.)
    • Minitab macro for the sampling. (to download, right click on the link and select "Save Target as...".  When saving the file, change the name from sampling.txt to smapling.mac)
    • In response to the very last question on the lab, please discuss in as much detail as possible how your simulations relate to and illustrate the ideas that we talked about in class this week, particularly the Central Limit Theorem.

Assignment for Monday, Feb. 11:

NOTE: The exam will be Wednesday, February 13.

There is no class on Monday, Feb. 18, and nothing will be collected on Wed., Feb. 20.

Assignment for Friday, Feb. 22:

  • Turn in the German Tank Problem.  You are encouraged to work with 1 or 2 other students on this assignment and turn in one copy for the group.
You should answer questions (a) through (d) on p. 5 of the handout, and you can also do question (e) for extra credit.  Compare a minimum of 4 different estimators (including 2*mean, max*(n+1)/n, and at least one other "adjustment" of the max; for the 4th estimator, pick something else that you think might work well).  For each the 4 estimators, you should do 4 sets of simulations:
    • Start with N=150 and n=5.
    • Then choose a larger value of n (but keep N=150).
    • Finally, pick a larger value of N and repeat the simulation for both of the values of n that you used before.

Note that we'll look at some things in class on Wednesday that may be helpful for questions (d) and (e) on p. 5.
