- Read Chapter 4 of Intro Stats.
Due Friday, January 13:
- Turn in answers for the three "follow-up
assessment" questions on p. 6 of the "Reasoning
of Statistical Inference" handout.
- If you have not already done so, read Chapter 4 of Intro Stats.
You could also start working on the Ch. 4 homework
assignment listed below, which will be collected next week.
Due Wednesday, January 18:
- Purchase a license for the ResponseWare classroom
response system. You will receive instructions in an
e-mail. We will use it in class on Wednesday, so it is
essential that you have the license before then.
**Note the adjustments
below due to the snow days!**
Due Monday, January 23:
- Complete the "graph matching" handout that was given out
in class last week. It will not be collected, but you
will be asked to submit your answers via the ResponseWare
system at the start of class, so please make sure that you
have completed this handout before the start of class.
- If you have not already done so, read chapters 4 and 5
of the textbook. Then go to Blackboard (https://learn.spu.edu/)
for this class (the site for this class is now up and
running) and complete the Reading Quiz for Chapters 4 & 5,
which can be found in the "content" area. The quiz
should be complete by 8:00 AM on Monday so that I can review
the results before class.

31, 36, 41, 44(M), 45(M), 49, 51(M, also make a histogram of
the data), and 55 from Chapter 4 of Intro Stats.
(You will need to use Minitab for exercises labeled (M)).
Solutions
Some special instructions:
- Please do #14 & #23 by hand -- do not use a computer for
the calculations.
- For #29, you do NOT need to compute the standard
deviations by hand. Just do the following: "Without
doing ANY calculations, decide which set has the larger
standard deviation and explain why." If you would
like, you can check your answers using Minitab, but you do
NOT need to compute by hand. The key thing that I'm
looking for on this question is the explanation.
- For #41, make a dotplot by hand; do not use Minitab.
- For #44, 45, and 51, please construct graphs and compute
any necessary statistics using Minitab. Print out and turn
in copies of your graphs.
Due Friday, January 27:
- Read Chapter 6 of Intro Stats.
- Turn in exercises 6, 8, 11, 19, 20, 26, 31, 33,
38, 40(M), 43(M), 45, 46(M), and 48(M) from Chapter 5 of Intro Stats.
Solutions
- Use Minitab for exercises labeled (M). Please
print out and turn in copies of any graphs that you produce.
For #46, please make a histogram (not a stem-and-leaf
display).
Due Wednesday,
February 1:
-
Turn in exercises 4, 7, 9, 10, 11, 18, 20,
22, 26, 27, 28, 31(M), 32, 34, 36, 38, 44(M), 46(M), 48(M),
51(M), 52(M), and 59(M) from Chapter 6 of Intro Stats.
Solutions
-
In addition, turn in answers for the 3
questions on the back side of the
"Elvis Presley and Alf
Landon" handout.
Solutions
The first exam will be Friday, February 3. Some
sample questions are available,
as well as answers for the sample
questions.
These sample questions are intended to be a helpful review of
material that we have covered so far. Please note that
these questions are NOT intended to look just like the exam.
The exam will cover topics that are not covered by these sample
questions, and the sample questions cover topics which will not
be on the exam. You are responsible for ALL of the
material that we have covered in class and on the homework from
chapters 1-6 of the text, plus the introductory material on
statistical inference using simulations.
The exam will be split into two parts: one part will require the
use of the computers and Minitab. Computers will not be
permitted for the other half of the exam. You should
bring a calculator for use during the exam (you can use it on
both parts of the exam). Cell phone calculators are
NOT permitted, and sharing of calculators during the exam is not
permitted.
The exam is open book. You may use your textbook and one
handwritten sheet of notes (you may write on both sides of the sheet).
You may not use any other notes, graded homework assignments,
etc. You also may not use the internet or any resources on
the computer other than Minitab during the exam.
Due Monday, February 6:
- If you have not already done so, read chapter 13
of the textbook. Then go to Blackboard (https://learn.spu.edu/)
and complete the Reading Quiz for Chapters 13. The quiz
should be complete by 8:00 AM on Monday so that I can review
the results before class.
Due Wednesday, February 8:
-
Turn in exercises 2, 4, 6, 8, 11, 14, 16, 17, 18, 20,
24, 25, 28, and 31 from Chapter 12 of Intro Stats.
-
In addition, read and complete the rest of
the handout that we were working on at the end of class on
Monday. This will not be collected, but we'll begin
class by going over this on Wednesday. Please be
prepared to answer questions.
Solutions
Due Friday, February
10:
- Turn in exercises 3, 5, 7, 9, 16, 21, 23, 27, 29, 43,
49, 52ab, and 55
from Chapter 13 of Intro Stats.
Solutions
Due Monday,
February 13:
- Complete questions (o), (p), and (q) on p. 6 of the
Leaning while
Kissing handout. Reread the entire handout
carefully and make sure you understand the key ideas.
Also reread the earlier
Naughty or Nice
handout about the infant study.
- From the probability
rules handout given out in class on Friday, work through
the first 4 pages.
- Nothing will be collected, but you should come to class
ready to answer questions on the items above.
- Also, please read Chapter 14 of Intro Stats.
The rework quiz for the first exam will be Wednesday,
February 15. Please look through your exam and make sure
that you understand all errors that you made.
Due Wednesday,
February 15:
- Complete and turn in answers for the two exercises on p.
7-8 of the
Leaning while Kissing handout.
- Also, please read Chapter 15 of Intro Stats.
- If you have time, start working on the homework for
Friday, which is listed below.
Due Friday,
February 17:
- Complete and turn in all of the following:
Due Friday,
February 24:
- Read Chapter 18 of Intro Stats. Start working on
the homework assignment below.
Due Monday,
February 27:
- Turn in exercises 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 13, 14, 15(M), 18, 20,
22(M), 23(M), and 24(M) from Chapter 18 of Intro Stats.
You'll probably need to use Minitab for some normal
distribution computations for the exercises marked with an
(M). Also, on the exercises where you are asked to
compute probabilities using the normal distribution (such as
#15c, 22, 23, and 24) give BOTH the probability AND the
Z-score.
Solutions
Due Wednesday,
February 29:
- Turn in exercises 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 13, 14,
16, 20, 24, 26, 32, 33, 34, 35, and 39 from Chapter 19 of
Intro Stats. For exercises 11 and onward,
please do the computations by hand to construct the
confidence intervals and show your work. However, you
are also encouraged to check your computations using
Minitab.
Solutions
- Read Chapter 20 of
Intro Stats.
Due Friday,
March 2:
- Turn in exercises 1, 2, 3, and 4 from Chapter 20 of
Intro Stats.
- Also turn in exercises 1 and 2 from Chapter 21 of
Intro Stats.

long and potentially pretty challenging!
Due Monday,
March 5:
- Turn in exercises 5, 8, 11, 13, 14, 16, 18,
19, 22, 23, 30, and 36 from Chapter 20 of
Intro Stats. For exercises 11-16, please do all
necessary computations by hand for the hypothesis tests and
show your work. However, you are also encouraged to
check your computations using Minitab. For exercises
18-36, you may use Minitab for all computations. you
do not need to show any printout, just write down your
results. However, it may be helpful to also write down
a description of what you did in Minitab so that I can give
partial credit if your answer is incorrect.
Solutions
- Turn in exercises 3, 7, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 19, 21,
23, 25, 27, and 33 from Chapter 21 of
Intro Stats.
Solutions
The second exam will be Wednesday, March 7. Some
sample questions are available,
as well as answers for the sample
questions.
These sample questions are intended to be a helpful review of
material that we have covered so far. Please note that
these questions are NOT intended to look just like the exam.
The exam will cover topics that are not covered by these sample
questions, and the sample questions cover topics which will not
be on the exam. You are responsible for ALL of the
material that we have covered in class and on the homework since
the last exam.
The structure of the exam is the same as the first exam.
